Commentary on Finance and Accounting Salaries in Shanghai, 2016
China’s continued economic slowdown has affected growth, with most companies adopting a more conservative approach for 2016. Over the last 12 months, activity levels have remained respectable and we expect the majority of businesses to continue their hiring requests, certainly for key positions, as well as replacement hires.
Increasingly, Chinese companies are becoming more attractive to finance professionals with multinational experience. Our ratio of successful cases from Chinese entities/multinationals has increased.
Finance professionals are more passionate about Internet, e-commerce industries and pre-IPO companies than ever before. We expect this trend to continue.
Traditionally, females account for the vast majority of professionals across the finance and accounting workspace in China. There are no significant changes expected in terms of the ratio of male and female employees in corporate finance, which is approximately 30:70.
Corporate finance employers are less willing to offer expatriate packages due to the higher cost. There is an abundant supply of China based finance professionals and 90% of workers are sourced locally. However, overseas returnees or overseas based Chinese professionals with foreign nationalities, who are looking for opportunities in China and willing to accept local packages, still have the language advantage.
In general, Chinese professionals will find it challenging to obtain external international roles. However, high-calibre talent will have access to overseas internal rotations. Accounting and finance professionals with fluent English will find it easier to secure overseas postings due to their easily transferrable skills.

Salaries will continue to increase, although moderate increases of 5-8% are more realistic. By obtaining further relevant qualifications and skills professionals can make themselves more attractive to future employers.
