Commentary on Retails & Luxury Roles and Remuneration in China for 2017

Hiring trends

China is enjoying an e-commerce boom as consumers transition from making purchases offline to online. This is particularly evident in the case of department stores and hypermarkets. Wider choice means that consumers are starting to prioritize design, functionality and fashion trends above brand name and price.

The rapid growth of e-commerce has led to some traditional retail companies cutting jobs, freezing headcounts or even closing their operations in China. It has also led candidates to change jobs more frequently, driving up wages in the process.

Separately, consumers are buying more luxury goods overseas due to open visa policies for tourists and reducing their spend in the local luxury market. So many retail professionals who previously worked in luxury have opted for a career change, moving into the e-commerce space or other sub-sectors of retail, such as fast fashion, hypermarket, lifestyle or sports.

While the local luxury market has been hit and some businesses have suffered due to the rise of e-commerce, retail is generally a very healthy sector in China. This is reflected in the rapid growth of shops – both physical and virtual – over the past few years. Some premium brands entered China for the first time in 2016 and there has been rapid growth in the children, home, lifestyle and sports retail sub-sectors.

Talent supply

Chinese professionals make up the bulk of the workforce in retail and locals have increasingly occupied managerial positions in recent years. Demand for overseas professionals is decreasing, although overseas returnees and candidates from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan still have many opportunities in the sector. The same goes for candidates from Singapore who are fluent in Mandarin. Multinationals tend to prefer returnees and overseas candidates because they are seen as more open-minded, more familiar with Western company culture and more likely to be fluent in English.

At present, there is high demand for merchandising managers, merchandising planning managers and retail operations managers and area managers within the Chinese retail sector.

Salary & compensation trends

Salaries for professionals who move roles in retail are likely to increase by 10-25% in 2017.
