Many internet start-ups were hit by a funding shortage in 2016 as China’s economic slowdown caused investors to turn cautious. This led to a surge in IT professionals leaving start-ups to work in research and development, product management and operations for medium-sized and large businesses, both in China and abroad.
Online finance, including peer-to-peer lending, is expanding rapidly and China has launched some new projects in this area, creating a number of IT jobs in the process. Businesses in other sectors have also invested in more IT positions as part of a strategy to drive growth. Some multinationals have relocated their research and development centres to India and other emerging markets for cost-efficiency purposes, however.
An interesting development is the creation of more companies that specialise in areas such as artificial intelligence, health, medicine and sport. These companies are actively pursuing individuals who are studying artificial intelligence at prestigious universities, as well as IT professionals who are working in health and medicine or more traditional industries.
Research and development in IT remains male-dominated, despite the small rise in female senior managers who hold marketing, operational or product roles. These women have often been brought in from large enterprises outside the IT sector. It has also become more common for female professionals with experience in traditional industries, or female researchers from overseas academic institutions, to secure jobs with internet companies.
For executive positions, both multinationals and local companies tend to prefer candidates with previous experience of working in the internet or IT sector. They often recruit IT professionals from Silicon Valley or from the pool of the 100 largest international businesses.
Chinese IT professionals are increasingly exploring emigration to countries such as Australia, Singapore and the US, mainly to develop their careers.
Salary & compensation trends
On average, highly competent IT and internet professionals with a strong academic background and experience of working for sizeable companies earned more in China than they earned overseas in 2016. This was due to the rapid development of the Chinese internet sector and high demand for good technicians and managers with experience of managing large projects. In 2017, salary rises are likely to be in the region of 0-15%.
